What the Bostitch BTFP12233 Is Used For

This Bostitch pneumatic brad nailer is made for finish work where you want a small, neat hole. Common jobs include:

  • Baseboard and shoe molding
  • Door and window casing
  • Crown molding and chair rail
  • Cabinet face frames, backs and trim
  • Picture frames, small furniture and craft projects

Choosing the Right Brads

The BTFP12233 takes standard 18 gauge brads from 5/8" to 2-1/8". Short brads (5/8" to 1") work well for thin trim and cabinet backs. Longer brads (1-1/2" to 2") hold baseboard and casing to the framing behind the drywall. Pick a length that passes through the trim and gets a good bite in the wood behind it, and add a box of Bostitch chisel point brads to your order so you don't run out mid-job.

How to Load and Use the Smart Point Nailer

  1. Disconnect the air hose before loading.
  2. Pull back the pusher, slide a strip of 18 gauge brads into the side-loading magazine, and let the pusher rest against the strip.
  3. Set your compressor between 70 and 120 psi. Start low and go up only as needed.
  4. Connect the hose and choose sequential or contact firing.
  5. Fire a few brads into scrap and turn the Dial-A-Depth wheel until the heads sit just right.
  6. Hold the nose flat on the work and pull the trigger.

Care, Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Because the tool is oil-free, upkeep is simple. Drain your compressor tank often and use clean, dry air. Wipe dust out of the magazine and nose now and then.

  • Clearing a jam: disconnect the air, open the tool-free latch on the nose, pull out the bent brad, close the latch and reconnect.
  • Brads sticking up: raise the air pressure a little or turn the depth dial deeper.
  • Brads sinking too deep: lower the pressure or turn the dial shallower.
  • Skipping brads: check that you are using 18 gauge brads in the right length and that the pusher moves freely.

Smart Point vs a Standard 18 Gauge Brad Nailer

Every 18 gauge brad nailer drives the same brads. The difference with the Bostitch Smart Point is the smaller nose. It's easier to see your mark and to fit into inside corners, along cabinet edges and around window stools. If most of your work is long, open runs of baseboard, a standard nose like the Bostitch BT1855K does the job too. Review the specs above to see which fits your work best.
