Heavy Duty Staplers

Nothing slows down a mailroom or print shop like a stapler that folds its staple in half on a thick report. Once your stacks run 50, 100 or 200 sheets of paper, a standard office stapler just can't push hard enough, and you end up pulling bent staples out of your documents. The staplers in this category are built for that kind of work, from manual models with long leverage handles to electric staplers that finish a stack with one tap.

What Makes a Stapler Heavy Duty?

A heavy-duty stapler has three things a regular desktop stapler doesn't: a sturdy metal frame, a long handle for extra leverage, and thicker staples with longer legs. The long handle spreads the force so you can drive a 5/8" or 15/16" staple through a big stack without hurting your hand. The metal frame and anvil hold up to that force day after day, and a rubber or non-skid base keeps the stapler from sliding across the desk. Most models also let you adjust the depth guide, so every staple lands the same distance from the edge.

Manual vs. Electric Heavy Duty Staplers

A manual stapler is the right tool when you staple thick stacks a few times a day. It needs no power cord, costs less, and the MAX HD-12N/24 and Bostitch 00540 handle more sheets than most electric models. The trade-off is effort. Even with good leverage, a 200-sheet job takes a firm push.

An electric stapler is the better pick when you staple all day. The Rapid 5080e and 5050e load 5,000 staples at a time, fire with a light touch and cut hand fatigue on long runs. They're fast and reliable for office use in law firms, banks, schools and mailrooms. If you also make booklets, the Rapid 106E switches between flat and saddle stapling. You can see every model in our electric desktop staplers and manual desktop staplers categories.

How to Choose the Best Heavy Duty Stapler

Start with your thickest stack, then add about 20 percent. That buffer keeps the stapler working smoothly instead of at its limit. Next, look at these features:

  • Staple size: Leg length sets the sheet range. A 3/8" leg covers about 25 to 55 sheets, while a 15/16" leg reaches 200 sheets or more.
  • Throat depth: This is how far from the edge you can staple. Most models reach about 2" to 2-3/4", which covers corners and side stapling.
  • Flat clinch: Flat clinch staplers fold the staple legs flat, so stapled stacks lie flatter and stack better in files.
  • Loading: Front or rear loading and a staple window make refills fast.
  • Volume: A few jobs a day calls for a manual model. Hundreds of jobs a day calls for an electric stapler.

If you're unsure, the MAX HD-12N/17 is a solid all-around choice for up to 135 sheets, and the MAX HD-12N/24 is the one to buy when stacks reach 240 sheets.

Heavy Duty Staples for Each Stapler

Heavy duty staples are thicker than standard office staples, and each brand uses its own crown and length. Always match the staple to the stapler model. MAX staplers take MAX FA-H staples, the Bostitch 00540 takes Bostitch SB35 staples, and the B380HD uses one staple size that trims itself to the stack. Pick the leg length that fits the job, not the longest one, so the staple clinches tight. You'll find refills in our office staples section.

Where These Staplers Get Used

Offices use them to bind legal briefs, contracts, training manuals, print shop jobs, school packets and bank documents. Any project that needs a thick stack held together securely is a good fit. These staplers are made for paper. For wood, fabric or upholstery, you need a staple gun instead, so take a look at our heavy duty staple guns.

Heavy Duty Stapler FAQ

How many sheets can a heavy duty stapler staple?

It depends on the model and staple size. Our manual models range from 90 sheets (MAX HD-12N/13) to 240 sheets (MAX HD-12N/24), and the Bostitch 00540 handles up to 215 sheets. Electric models handle 50 to 80 sheets per pass.

What staples go in a heavy duty stapler?

Use the staples made for your model. MAX models take MAX FA-H staples, and the Bostitch 00540 takes SB35 staples. Choose the leg length based on how many sheets you're stapling.

When is an electric stapler better than a manual one?

When you staple many stacks a day. An electric stapler saves time and reduces hand strain, while a manual model is better for occasional thick jobs and the very biggest stacks.

Can a heavy duty stapler staple cardboard or fabric?

No. These staplers are made for paper documents. For fabric, wood or upholstery, use a staple gun or tacker.

How do I load a heavy duty stapler?

Most models load from the front or rear. Open the magazine, drop in a strip of the correct staples, close it and test on a few sheets. Electric models like the Rapid 5080e use a cassette you simply slide in.

What should I do if my stapler jams?

Unplug electric models first. Open the magazine, remove the bent staple with a staple remover or pliers, and reload with the correct staple size. Jams often happen when the staple size doesn't match the stack. If it keeps jamming, our repair team can fix it.
